A close call in Fort Worth left a family shaken Sunday after a vehicle veered off the road and crashed through the fence of a residential backyard while children were playing outside.
The crash occurred along Herritage Trace Parkway, a road that runs directly adjacent to the fence line of a nearby subdivision, leaving very little buffer between passing traffic and private property. The tight proximity of the road to the homes made the incident especially dangerous.
The vehicle’s passenger was transported to a local hospital with injuries that have not yet been publicly disclosed. The driver and the residents of the home were not physically harmed.
Fort Worth police issued the driver a citation for reckless driving. However, the family whose yard was struck says that punishment falls far short of what the situation demands.
In a written statement, the parents said they are grateful their children survived but stressed that the incident was alarmingly close to becoming a tragedy. They said they are prepared to work alongside city officials, lawmakers, law enforcement, and neighborhood leaders to push for stricter accountability measures targeting reckless drivers.
Fort Worth City Councilman Charlie Lauersdorf visited the scene personally to assess the damage. He has since requested that Fort Worth police increase speed enforcement patrols in the area, a request the department has agreed to fulfill.
Lauersdorf also reached out to the city’s Director of Transportation and Public Works to evaluate whether a stop sign could be installed at the intersection near where the crash occurred, a move that could help slow traffic in the area and prevent future incidents.
The destroyed fence visible in photos from the scene underscores just how violently the vehicle entered the property. Neighbors and the affected family are now calling on the city to take a hard look at the road’s design and the lack of separation between the street and residential yards.
