A devastating mass shooting left nine people dead Friday evening in Erie, Pennsylvania, including multiple children, in what authorities are calling one of the most tragic incidents the city has ever seen.
Erie Police responded to a residence around 5 p.m. on October 9 after witnesses reported a gunman firing shots outside the home before forcing his way inside. Officers arriving on the scene discovered two women shot dead in the street in front of the house.
The situation quickly escalated into a tense standoff as Erie Police and SWAT teams surrounded the property. Additional gunshots were then heard coming from inside the home.
When law enforcement finally entered the residence, they found seven more victims dead inside, among them children. The suspected gunman was also found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah addressed the public following the incident, calling the scene one of the most heartbreaking he has ever encountered in his career. He confirmed that the suspect is deceased and that there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
“The loss of life is devastating and the circumstances we are working through are deeply disturbing” Chief Lorah said. “Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this tragedy.”
Investigators are now working to piece together what led to the deadly rampage. Chief Lorah said authorities would not speculate on a motive at this time in order to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
“It’s just a devastating loss of life. It’s a terrible, terrible scene and we just need time to piece together what happened here” the chief added.
The identities of the victims have not yet been publicly released as authorities continue their investigation and work to notify families. The exact number of children among the deceased has also not been confirmed.
The shooting stands as one of the deadliest mass casualty events in Erie’s history and has sent shockwaves through the community and across the country.
