Dallas police are preparing to release body camera footage and provide a public update following an officer-involved shooting that unfolded Wednesday afternoon near the R.L. Thornton Freeway.

The incident occurred around 12:21 p.m. in the 400 block of South R.L. Thornton Freeway. Officers had tracked down the suspect using Flock surveillance technology after identifying him as wanted on multiple felony warrants connected to narcotics charges and a probation violation.

When officers made contact and the suspect opened the door he was holding a long rifle. An officer discharged their weapon at that point. Officers then issued repeated commands ordering the suspect to put the weapon down but he refused to comply according to preliminary information from the Dallas Police Department.

The situation took a dramatic turn when the suspect then shot himself with a separate firearm. His current condition has not been officially confirmed in the preliminary reports released by police.

No officers sustained injuries during the confrontation. The release of body camera footage is expected to provide greater clarity on the sequence of events as investigators continue to piece together exactly what transpired.

The use of Flock technology played a central role in locating the suspect before the confrontation. Flock is a license plate recognition and surveillance system that law enforcement agencies across the country have increasingly adopted to track individuals with outstanding warrants.

The Dallas Police Department has not yet confirmed a specific time for the press briefing or footage release. The investigation remains active and additional details are expected to emerge once officials formally address the public.
