A Van Zandt County sheriff’s deputy was killed Tuesday night during a violent confrontation with a suspect who opened fire on law enforcement officers attempting to serve felony warrants at a residence south of Canton.

The incident unfolded around 10 p.m. on October 20 in the 4300 block of State Highway 198. Deputies were assisting the Canton Police Department with the warrant service when gunfire erupted from inside the home.

At approximately 10:22 p.m. the suspect began shooting at officers from inside the residence. Law enforcement personnel outside returned fire resulting in an exchange of gunshots that wounded both a sheriff’s deputy and a Canton police officer.

The deputy succumbed to his injuries making him the latest Texas law enforcement officer to lose his life in the line of duty. The Canton police officer was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and officials have not yet publicly disclosed that officer’s condition.

The suspect was found dead inside the home from a gunshot wound sustained during the exchange of fire. Authorities said the individual was wanted on outstanding felony warrants for aggravated assault and aggravated assault of a peace officer issued by the Canton Police Department.

The names of the fallen deputy, the injured officer and the suspect have not been released as of this report. Officials indicated next of kin notifications are likely a factor in the delay of identification.

The Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the shooting was an isolated incident and stated there is no continuing threat to the surrounding community. The Texas Rangers have taken over the investigation as is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings across the state.

Van Zandt County is located approximately 60 miles east of Dallas placing this tragedy within the broader Dallas-Fort Worth region. The loss of the deputy marks a devastating moment for the county’s law enforcement community and the residents they serve.
