Idaho Mother Faces Death Penalty After Twin Toddlers Found Dead in Shared Bed

A Payette County prosecutor has formally announced plans to pursue the death penalty against a 23-year-old Idaho mother charged with murdering her 18-month-old twin children earlier this year.

Andrea Shaw has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges stemming from the May 1 2025 deaths of her twins who were discovered unresponsive in the bed they shared. Shaw has maintained that the children died as a result of routine childhood vaccinations they received eight days before their deaths.

Deputy prosecuting attorney Ryon Sirucek filed notice with the court of his intent to seek capital punishment. Payette County Prosecutor Mike Duke stated in court documents that autopsy findings pointed to smothering as the cause of death and described suffocation as the only conceivable explanation for what happened to the children.

Prosecutors intend to argue four aggravating factors to justify the death penalty. Those factors include that two murders occurred simultaneously that the killings were especially heinous and cruel that Shaw showed a complete disregard for human life and that she would likely remain a danger to others.

Shaw had taken the twins to an emergency room the day after their vaccinations reporting lethargy and fever. A physician attributed those symptoms to a normal vaccine reaction and sent the children home after giving them Tylenol.

Days after the twins died Shaw appeared on an internet program connected to Children’s Health Defense an anti-vaccine organization previously founded by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. She is also listed as a plaintiff in a federal lawsuit filed by that group against the American Academy of Pediatrics alleging the organization misled the public about vaccine safety.

Medical professionals have emphasized that the vaccines in question including hepatitis A influenza and DTaP are widely considered safe and are recommended by major health organizations for young children. The American Academy of Pediatrics has sought dismissal of the lawsuit calling it an attack on its science-based vaccine guidance.

A grand jury returned murder indictments against Shaw in July and she has remained jailed without the possibility of bond since that time. Her defense attorney Joseph Filicetti previously stated that Shaw denies all allegations and that prosecutors cannot prove the charges against her. Trial is currently scheduled to begin in January.
