A United Airlines flight bound for Newark, New Jersey was forced to turn around and return to Las Vegas Saturday night after a passenger aboard allegedly made a terroristic threat, prompting authorities to intervene.

Las Vegas police detained and arrested a 25-year-old man following the incident. He now faces charges of making a threat or providing false information regarding an act of terrorism.

The Federal Aviation Administration described the situation as a “passenger disturbance” reported by the flight crew. The FAA confirmed it will launch a formal investigation into the incident.

Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 shows the aircraft returned to Las Vegas within an hour of departing. The plane carried approximately 150 passengers at the time of the incident.

United Airlines confirmed the flight returned safely to address what the airline called a “potential security concern.” Passengers were delayed overnight before the flight resumed its trip to Newark on Sunday morning.

Authorities have not publicly disclosed the specific nature of the threat or the exact words or actions attributed to the suspect. An attorney representing the man had not responded to requests for comment as of the time of reporting.

The suspect’s initial court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday. Additional details about the case are expected to emerge as legal proceedings get underway.

The FAA noted that unruly passenger incidents remain a persistent problem across the aviation industry in 2026 with more than 1,400 such incidents recorded so far this year.
