A specialized law enforcement unit is quietly working before dawn across the Dallas-Fort Worth area to bring some of the region’s most dangerous fugitives to justice, and the results are adding up fast.
The North Texas Fugitive Violent Criminal Task Force has recorded more than 1,000 felony warrant arrests, with 35 of those coming in just the first two weeks of July alone. The multi-agency operation brings together U.S. Marshals, Texas state police and Dallas Police Department officers to pursue suspects wanted for violent crimes including murder.
Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux made clear the department’s position on fugitives. “We will continue to go after the worst of the worst every single day in the city of Dallas” Comeaux said.
On a recent Friday morning just after 4:30 a.m. the Alpha Team mobilized to arrest Jamal Greene who faces a capital murder charge connected to a Memorial Day weekend shooting at a West Dallas Airbnb rental. Three people died and a fourth was injured in that attack.
Officers gathered near a Forney residence where they believed Greene was hiding when surveillance on the home detected unexpected movement. A vehicle was leaving the garage and the team had to quickly shift their approach.
Sergeant Sheldon Smith described the unpredictable nature of the work. “It is fluid” he said noting that plans can change in seconds based on what happens in the field.
Greene was taken into custody without a struggle. As officers placed him under arrest he called out to his mother saying he loved her and maintained he had done nothing wrong. A search warrant was also executed at the residence and a handgun was recovered after a drone swept the home for safety.
The task force did not stop there. Later that same morning officers shifted to Pleasant Grove where they arrested a 16-year-old also wanted in connection with a separate Dallas murder investigation.
Smith said the team took extra precautions given the suspect’s age. “We definitely want to be overly careful with a kid this age” he said. The teenager was found in a bedroom taken into custody and transported without incident.
Smith reflected on what drives the work his team does each day. “For someone to do something that violent you have a reckless disregard for life” he said adding that getting suspects safely into the system is the team’s primary goal.
Authorities say both arrests are part of a broader push expected to result in hundreds of violent offender apprehensions across North Texas before the year ends.
