A Fort Worth neighborhood is at the center of a murder investigation after a man was shot and killed in his own vehicle on August 9th and a suspect with a reported history of disputes with neighbors was taken into custody following a police standoff.
Jose Escamilla now faces a murder charge in connection with the death of Rudy Jaramillo after Fort Worth police say surveillance footage captured him carrying out the fatal shooting. Escamilla remains jailed on a $250,000 bond.
Former neighbor Fae Collins says the tragedy was not a surprise. Collins lived near the Talons Crest Circle address for roughly two years before moving away and says she witnessed troubling behavior from Escamilla on multiple occasions during that time.
She described seeing Escamilla sitting outside his home with a rifle and said he pointed surveillance cameras directly at neighboring properties. Collins also filed a police report last December alleging that Escamilla assaulted her 11-year-old son.
Out of fear for her children’s safety Collins said she stopped allowing them outside unless she or their father was present. The family eventually broke their lease and relocated rather than continue living near him.
When Collins heard about the August 9th standoff she received a phone call from a former neighbor still living in the area who told her Escamilla had shot and killed Jaramillo inside his own car. Collins said the person told her that both of them had predicted something like this could happen and that they had contacted police about Escamilla numerous times before.
According to the arrest affidavit Escamilla himself acknowledged to investigators that ongoing disputes with neighbors had been a source of tension. He reportedly told police he had called them just one to two weeks before the shooting because he believed neighbors had tampered with his surveillance cameras.
Fort Worth police declined to provide details about any prior complaints or calls involving Escamilla citing the active nature of the investigation. Authorities stated only that the information contained in the redacted affidavit was all that was currently available to the public.
Collins expressed frustration that earlier complaints did not result in meaningful action. She believes authorities had enough warning signs to intervene before the situation turned deadly.
No charges were ever filed in connection with the alleged assault on her son. Collins says that failure to act contributed directly to the outcome on August 9th.
Escamilla’s legal representative had not responded to requests for comment as of the time of this report. The investigation into the shooting and the events leading up to it remains ongoing.
