Christa Pike Still Unconscious on Ventilator Four Days After Botched Tennessee Execution

Christa Pike has not regained consciousness since a failed lethal injection attempt in Tennessee last Wednesday, and her medical outlook remains deeply uncertain, according to her defense attorney.

Assistant Federal Defender Stephen Ferrell told CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday that Pike remains hospitalized under guard and on a ventilator as medical staff work to clear a massive dose of the barbiturate pentobarbital from her system. When asked whether she had regained consciousness at any point following the failed execution, Ferrell said he was not aware that she had.

Tennessee prison officials administered two separate doses of the lethal injection drug during the Wednesday night execution attempt. The drug failed to kill Pike, and her legal team says her arms suffered burns and blistering from the caustic chemical.

Pike has designated someone to hold her medical power of attorney, and that individual is shielding details about her condition from public disclosure. Her attorneys have not identified who is making her medical decisions, and Ferrell said a full prognosis may not be available for several more days.

“We don’t know right now, and we may never know what sort of torture she endured during that process” Ferrell said. He added that questions about her pain, awareness, and mental state during the procedure may never be fully answered.

Pike’s attorneys filed a court request Friday asking Tennessee prison officials to preserve all records, communications, images, and video connected to the execution attempt. Ferrell also called on the state to be more transparent about how executions are carried out, saying Tennessee residents deserve to know what is being done in their name.

This marks the second time in 2024 that Tennessee has failed to execute a death row inmate. In May, the state halted the execution of Tony Carruthers after medical staff could not establish a secondary IV line. Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada announced his resignation Saturday in the wake of the Pike incident.

Governor Bill Lee has ordered an independent investigation into the state’s capital punishment procedures, to be led by former U.S. Attorney Ed Stanton. A prior review following a 2022 execution that Lee himself called off found the state had not followed its own lethal injection protocol.

Pike, now 50, was convicted of the 1995 torture and murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville. She was 18 at the time and became one of the youngest women ever sentenced to death in the United States. Her attorneys have asked Governor Lee to commute her sentence to life in prison. Ferrell noted that even if Pike recovers, questions about her mental competency could complicate any future legal proceedings.
