A wrong-way driver suspected of operating a vehicle while intoxicated killed a motorcyclist in a violent head-on collision early Saturday morning along State Highway 114 in Irving, police confirmed.
The crash occurred at approximately 2:40 a.m. when a vehicle traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of SH114 near Hidden Ridge struck a motorcycle traveling in the correct direction of traffic. The force of the impact proved fatal for the motorcyclist, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Irving Police Department officers responded to the scene and took the driver of the wrong-way vehicle into custody on suspicion of intoxicated driving. A passenger riding in the suspect vehicle was also arrested and charged with public intoxication.
Authorities shut down the affected stretch of SH114 for more than six hours while investigators worked to reconstruct the crash, collect evidence and clear the wreckage from the roadway. The highway was fully reopened to traffic by approximately 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
Wrong-way driving incidents are among the most deadly types of roadway collisions because they typically involve high-speed head-on impacts that leave little to no time for either driver to react. Crashes occurring in the early morning hours are frequently linked to driver impairment, reduced visibility and decreased traffic volume that may give intoxicated drivers a false sense of security on the road.
The identity of the deceased motorcyclist has not yet been publicly released by Irving Police, and it is unclear whether the department has notified next of kin. The names of the individuals arrested in connection with the crash have also not been disclosed at this time.
Intoxication manslaughter is a second-degree felony under Texas law and carries a potential prison sentence of two to twenty years along with significant fines. If investigators determine the facts of the case support that charge, the driver could face serious legal consequences beyond a standard DWI arrest.
Irving Police have not yet indicated whether additional charges are expected as the investigation continues. The department’s traffic unit is believed to be leading the inquiry into the circumstances that led to the fatal collision.
SH114 is a heavily traveled corridor connecting Irving to areas including Las Colinas and the DFW Airport region. The extended closure during the early morning hours caused traffic disruptions for commuters and travelers heading into the area as the day began.
