A rapidly spreading grass fire in Van Zandt County has grown to more than 400 acres and remains only 25 percent contained as of Tuesday evening, prompting road closures and threatening multiple homes in its path.
The Myrtle Springs Volunteer Fire Department reported the blaze ignited around 2:30 p.m. near County Road 3406 and State Highway 64, just outside the city of Wills Point. SH 64 has been closed as crews work to battle the flames.
The fire grew at an alarming rate throughout the afternoon and evening. It stood at approximately 75 acres around 4:19 p.m. before doubling in size by 6 p.m. and surging past 400 acres by 8:30 p.m.
Officials have warned that several homes lie directly in the fire’s path as it continues to spread rapidly. As of the latest update at 8:30 p.m. no homes had been reported damaged.
At least two firefighters sustained injuries while battling the blaze and both are reported to be in stable condition. Multiple agencies from the surrounding area have responded to assist the Myrtle Springs department.
Authorities are urging all drivers and residents to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. Heavy smoke from the fire has been reported blocking several adjacent county roads near the scene making travel dangerous.
Officials planned to release an updated statement to the public around 9 p.m. Tuesday night. Conditions remain active and the situation continues to evolve as crews work to establish containment lines around the perimeter of the fire.
