The FBI confirmed Wednesday it is actively investigating claims by a cybercriminal group that it successfully breached the bureau’s official jobs website and obtained highly sensitive personal information belonging to thousands of FBI agents and job applicants.
In an official statement, the FBI acknowledged awareness of the alleged compromise of FBIJobs.gov and said it is working aggressively alongside third-party vendors that support the portal to assess and contain any potential damage. The bureau stated that the exact point of entry had not yet been confirmed.
A hacking collective known as ShinyHunters posted a message online claiming responsibility for the attack and asserting it holds sensitive data on nearly all FBI agents as well as individuals who have submitted job applications to the bureau. The message was addressed directly to FBI Director Kash Patel and the assistant director overseeing the bureau’s cyber division.
ShinyHunters framed the alleged breach not as a financial demand but as a response to an FBI public advisory issued in May that labeled the group a cybercriminal organization specializing in large-scale data theft and extortion. The group said it was offended by that characterization and gave the FBI one week to retract or correct the advisory.
The hacking group insisted its actions were not motivated by money and denied that the situation constituted ransom or extortion. It did not specify what consequences would follow if the FBI failed to meet its demands within the stated timeframe.
The FBIJobs.gov portal remained offline as of Wednesday afternoon. The site serves as the primary gateway for prospective employees to explore career opportunities and begin the application process with the bureau.
The FBI has faced a series of cyber intrusions in recent months. In March the bureau disclosed it was examining suspicious activity on an internal system tied to surveillance and investigative operations. That same month a pro-Iranian hacking group claimed to have accessed an account belonging to Director Patel and published what appeared to be old personal photographs and documents online.
ShinyHunters has a documented history of high-profile data breaches targeting major organizations. The FBI’s May advisory described the group as threat actors who frequently use real or exaggerated claims of stolen data to pressure victims and may fabricate compromising material to coerce payment.
Federal authorities have not confirmed the authenticity or full scope of the data the group claims to possess. The investigation remains ongoing.
