Fort Worth ISD high school under lockdown on first day back

A Fort Worth high school was placed under lockdown Monday morning after a student was found to have photographed himself on campus with a firearm, setting off a security response on what was already a significant day for the district.

O.D. Wyatt High School in Fort Worth became the scene of a law enforcement operation after school officials and police were alerted to the presence of a weapon on school grounds. The incident unfolded on the first day students returned to class following the state takeover of Fort Worth ISD.

According to Fort Worth Police, the situation came to light when a student contacted her parent to report that another individual at the school was in possession of a gun. That parent then notified authorities, prompting officers to respond to the campus.

Upon arrival, law enforcement detained two individuals in connection with the incident. The school was placed under lockdown as a precautionary measure while officers worked to secure the building and assess the threat.

Fort Worth ISD confirmed that both students and staff remained safe throughout the lockdown. Officials stressed that the security measure was initiated out of an abundance of caution rather than in response to an active or ongoing threat inside the school.

The district issued a statement urging parents and family members to stay away from the campus while the investigation remained active. Officials said the presence of additional civilians near the school could interfere with the law enforcement response and slow down the process of clearing the building.

Fort Worth ISD said it was cooperating fully with law enforcement and pledged to release additional details as the investigation progressed. No further information about the identities of those detained or the circumstances surrounding the firearm photograph was immediately available.

The timing of the incident added an extra layer of tension to an already notable day for the district. Monday marked the first day of school since the Texas Education Agency assumed control of Fort Worth ISD following ongoing concerns about district management and academic performance. The state takeover had already drawn significant attention from parents, educators and community members across the region.

Bringing a firearm onto a school campus in Texas is a serious criminal offense that can result in felony charges depending on the age of the individual involved and the specific circumstances. Law enforcement and school officials were expected to work through the investigation before making any formal announcements regarding potential charges.

Parents in the area were advised to monitor official communications from Fort Worth ISD for updates on when normal school operations would resume at O.D. Wyatt High School.
