A security guard employed at a Fort Worth shopping center has been taken into custody and charged with murder following a deadly shooting that occurred while he was on duty.

Tyron Henton, 31, was arrested on October 16 and faces a murder charge in connection with the fatal shooting at La Gran Plaza, located along the 4200 block of South Freeway in Fort Worth.

According to Fort Worth Police, the incident began when a man inside the shopping center started smashing glass display cases. Henton, who was working as an armed security guard at the time, encountered the individual during the disturbance and opened fire, striking the man at least once.

Fort Worth Police Department spokesperson Officer Buddy Calzada confirmed the shooting during a late-night briefing and noted that investigators are still working to determine the full circumstances that led Henton to discharge his weapon.

After being shot, the man fled the shopping center and made his way across the parking lot before collapsing near Seminary Drive. Officers and Fort Worth firefighters responded to the scene and immediately began life-saving efforts, including administering CPR.

Despite those efforts, medical personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene. His identity has not been publicly released.

La Gran Plaza was open at the time of the shooting and was approaching its 9 p.m. closing time according to hours listed on the shopping center’s website.

Authorities have not yet disclosed what led the man to begin destroying property inside the store or whether any prior confrontation occurred before Henton fired his weapon. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
