A young child is dead and another child was injured following a violent incident Thursday morning at an Arlington apartment complex, prompting a homicide investigation by local authorities.

Officers responded to the Woodwind Apartments located on the 1600 block of South Cooper Street in central Arlington, where they discovered a 5-year-old boy who had been fatally harmed. A second child was also injured in the incident, though details surrounding that child’s condition have not been fully disclosed by police.

Authorities have identified Heyco Cruz Linares as the suspect in the case. Linares is currently being held at the Arlington City Jail and faces a charge of capital murder of a person under the age of 10, which is among the most serious criminal charges under Texas law.

In addition to the capital murder charge, Linares has also been charged with evading arrest and making terroristic threats against a peace officer. Bond had not been set as of Thursday morning and it remains unclear whether Linares has legal representation.

The 5-year-old victim was confirmed to be a student enrolled in the Arlington Independent School District. The Arlington ISD has not yet issued a public statement regarding the child’s death.

Arlington Police had scheduled a news conference for approximately 11 a.m. Thursday to provide further details on the case but had not yet addressed reporters as of 11:30 a.m. Investigators have not publicly disclosed the circumstances that led to the child’s death or the specific events that unfolded inside the apartment.

The investigation remains active and ongoing as detectives work to piece together a full account of what occurred at the complex Thursday morning.
