A man was fatally shot while behind the wheel in Dallas’s Lake Highlands area Monday afternoon, leaving investigators combing through a busy commercial parking lot for clues.
Dallas Police responded to the scene near the intersection of Plano Road and Walnut Hill Lane shortly after 12:20 p.m. The victim, struck by gunfire while driving, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree before being pronounced dead at the scene.
Surveillance footage from a Take 5 Oil Change business captured what appeared to be a shooter opening fire on a white car in a shared parking lot with a Family Dollar store at approximately 12:21 p.m. The stricken vehicle then veered across Walnut Hill Lane before coming to rest on a sidewalk in front of a nearby storage facility.
Officers blocked off Walnut Hill Lane as investigators spread out across the parking lot placing more than a dozen evidence markers throughout the area. The heavy police presence drew attention from nearby residents including one man who said he was in his backyard adjacent to the store when he heard the gunshots ring out.
The identity of the victim has not been publicly released pending notification of the victim’s family. Authorities have not disclosed what may have triggered the shooting or offered any description of the suspected gunman.
No arrests have been announced as of Monday afternoon and the investigation remains active.
