Body camera footage released by South Texas law enforcement has captured the harrowing moment officers rushed to save a man who became trapped in a massive bee swarm in the small city of Lyford, located near the Texas-Mexico border.
The video shows officers sprinting toward the victim after he collapsed near a neighboring property and was unable to flee the aggressive swarm. A towel had already been draped over the man in a desperate attempt to protect him from the attacking bees before police arrived.
Despite being swarmed themselves and sustaining multiple stings in the process, officers managed to physically drag the man to safety inside a patrol vehicle. One officer then turned back and ran toward the scene a second time to retrieve a jacket, using it as an additional layer of protection against the ongoing attack.
Authorities said the incident began while the man was performing routine yard work near his home when the bees turned aggressive and overwhelmed him. Because the victim had a physical disability that limited his mobility, he was unable to escape on his own and quickly became trapped under the swarm.
The man was stung at least 30 times during the attack. The extent of any injuries beyond the stings has not been fully detailed by authorities, but the rapid response by officers is credited with preventing a potentially fatal outcome.
Following the rescue, investigators surveyed the surrounding area and tracked down the source of the swarm. A large beehive was discovered in a nearby vacant lot that bordered the victim’s property. The hive has since been professionally removed to eliminate any further threat to residents in the area.
Bee attacks of this scale are not entirely uncommon in South Texas, where Africanized honey bees, sometimes called killer bees, have been a known presence for decades. These bees are far more aggressive than typical honey bees and tend to respond to disturbances in large numbers, making encounters especially dangerous for people who cannot quickly move away.
The body camera footage has drawn significant attention online after being released, with many viewers praising the officers for their willingness to run directly into the swarm to save the victim. The rescue required both physical courage and quick decision-making under extremely difficult conditions.
Lyford is a small community in Willacy County in the Rio Grande Valley region of Texas. Local officials have not released the identity of the victim. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by aggressive bee colonies when they are disturbed in residential areas.
