A Saginaw Police officer shot an armed man Saturday morning after responding to a welfare check at a residential address in the city, triggering investigations by both state and local authorities.

Officers were dispatched around 11:25 a.m. to the 300 block of Asbury Drive following a 911 call reporting that a man was experiencing a mental health crisis and had allegedly attempted to harm himself.

Upon arrival, officers encountered the man holding a rifle. According to the Saginaw Police Department, officers repeatedly attempted to calm the situation and issued verbal commands to the man before the confrontation escalated.

When the man moved toward officers while still armed with the rifle, one officer fired his handgun, striking the man. Emergency medical personnel from both the Saginaw Fire Department and Fort Worth Fire Department EMS responded to the scene and transported the man to a nearby hospital. His condition has not been publicly confirmed.

The Texas Rangers have been called in to conduct an independent criminal investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Their findings will be submitted to the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office for review.

Simultaneously, the Saginaw Police Department has launched its own internal administrative investigation to determine whether officers followed proper department protocols during the incident.

Authorities have not released details about what was said between officers and the man in the moments before the shooting or what circumstances led to the original 911 call being placed.

The Saginaw Police Department released a statement saying the department remains committed to justice and transparency and is asking the public for patience as investigators work to establish a full account of what took place.
