Two Fort Worth firefighters were hospitalized Monday night after being caught in a sudden surge of fire and heat while battling a blaze inside a two-story home on the city’s south side. The incident also left three residents without a place to stay.
Emergency crews were dispatched just before 11 p.m. to the 7600 block of Crowley Road after reports of a structure fire. Upon arrival firefighters observed heavy smoke pouring from the residence and immediately moved in to contain the flames.
As crews advanced toward the second floor to engage the fire directly they were blindsided by a rapid and intense burst of heat and flames. Wind gusts reaching up to 25 miles per hour at the time are believed to have contributed to the sudden escalation of the blaze.
The dangerous conditions prompted a mayday call to be issued from inside the structure. A second alarm was then called in bringing additional resources to the scene as the situation grew more critical.
Two firefighters sustained burn injuries during the ordeal and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. As of early Tuesday morning both were reported to be in stable condition.
The three adults who lived in the home were displaced as a result of the fire and are currently receiving assistance from the American Red Cross. The organization is helping them secure temporary shelter and other essential needs.
Fort Worth Fire Department officials have not yet released information regarding the cause of the fire or the extent of structural damage to the home. An investigation is expected to be conducted in the coming days.
