A week of mourning begins Monday for fallen Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Deputy Adam Sherifi as his body is transported from Dallas to his home community of Canton in a dignified law enforcement escort.

Sherifi, 31 and a father of two, was shot and killed in the line of duty last Tuesday while attempting to serve felony warrants alongside a Canton police officer. Investigators say a suspect inside a residence opened fire with a semiautomatic rifle, discharging approximately 800 rounds during the confrontation.

Canton Police Officer Chris Watson was also struck by gunfire during the incident, suffering a wound to his right arm. Watson has since been released from the hospital but faces at least one additional surgery as part of his ongoing recovery.

The dignified escort is set to depart the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office at 2355 N. Stemmons Freeway at approximately 10 a.m. Monday. The procession will travel along Interstate 35, Interstate 45, U.S. Highway 175, Interstate 20 and State Highway 64 before arriving at Eubank Funeral Home in Canton.

The Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging residents, first responders and supporters of law enforcement to line the roadways and overpasses along the route to welcome Deputy Sherifi home. Due to vehicle limitations within the official escort, fire departments and emergency personnel are being asked to position their vehicles along overpasses as a show of support.

Community members will have the opportunity to pay their respects at Eubank Funeral Home following the escort. A funeral service honoring Sherifi’s life and dedication to public service is scheduled for Wednesday in Canton.

In the days since the shooting, the Van Zandt County community has rallied strongly around the families of both officers. The sheriff’s office has publicly acknowledged the overwhelming wave of support from across the region.

“Your presence, prayers, and support mean more than words can express during this difficult time” the sheriff’s office said in a statement to the public.

Sherifi’s death has sent shockwaves through the tight-knit East Texas community and drawn an outpouring of grief from law enforcement agencies across the state. Residents have expressed a collective commitment to stand beside the deputy’s family throughout the mourning period.

The suspect involved in the shooting has not been publicly identified in recent updates from investigators. Authorities have not released additional details regarding charges or the status of the case as the community prepares to lay Deputy Sherifi to rest.
