A 22-year-old Dallas man remains in critical condition after being stabbed in the Bishop Arts District early Saturday morning in what his family describes as a desperate fight for survival.
Dallas police responded to the 500 block of North Madison Avenue around 1:40 a.m. Saturday after receiving a stabbing call. Officers determined the victim had been stabbed in the torso by an unknown suspect. Family members identified the young man as Abraham “A.B.” Herrera.
Surveillance footage captured the moments after two groups exited a nearby taco shop. The video shows a confrontation breaking out in which a woman was struck and Herrera was stabbed. His aunt Brenda Trevino said her nephew stepped in to protect his girlfriend when the violence erupted.
The footage then shows Herrera walking back toward the taco shop before collapsing onto a bench as police arrived on scene. Paramedics transported him by stretcher to a local hospital where he has remained in critical condition for nearly a week.
Trevino said the blade pierced her nephew’s heart. Doctors told the family the wound was potentially fatal and that Herrera’s survival thus far is being described as a miracle.
The family is now pleading with the public for help. Trevino urged anyone who was in the area that night or who has photos or video from the scene to contact Dallas police and speak with the detective assigned to the case.
Trevino described her nephew as a gentle and loving person despite his large physical presence. She said the family is speaking out on his behalf because he currently cannot speak for himself.
Dallas police confirmed the investigation remains active and ongoing. No arrests have been announced and the identity of the suspect has not been released. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Dallas Police Department.
