Argam Nazarian, an Iranian Christian of Armenian descent, is currently trapped in a legal and geopolitical stalemate within the U.S. detention system. After fleeing religious persecution and spending years building a life in Los Angeles, he was arrested by federal agents in 2025. Despite an immigration judge ruling that he is neither a flight risk nor a danger to the public—and ordering his release on bond—the federal government has refused to set him free, citing a recent policy shift that mandates detention for those who entered the country without inspection.
His situation is further complicated by the outbreak of war between the U.S. and Iran in early 2026, which has indefinitely suspended all deportation flights. Now held in a New Mexico facility, Nazarian faces deteriorating health due to an untreated, severe knee injury. While his legal team fights the conflicting detention laws between Texas and New Mexico, he remains in a state of indefinite limbo, unable to return to his family in California or be safely deported to his war-torn home country.
