The Dallas Police Department gathered this week to unveil a portrait of Officer Darron Burks at the South Central Patrol Division, marking nearly two years since the officer was ambushed and killed while sitting in his patrol vehicle.
Department leadership, fellow officers, family members and fraternity brothers attended the solemn ceremony to pay tribute to Burks and reaffirm that his sacrifice would never be forgotten.
Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux addressed those gathered and made clear that the portrait is more than a painting. He said it represents a permanent commitment to honoring Burks’ memory within the department he served.
Comeaux who is also a member of the same Omega fraternity as Burks said he felt the weight of the officer’s death even while stationed with the Drug Enforcement Administration in Houston at the time of the shooting. The loss reached far beyond Dallas city limits.
Deputy Chief Jordan Colunga spoke about the character and dedication Burks brought to his work every day. Colunga described how Burks’ passion for service defined his time with the department and left a lasting impression on everyone who worked alongside him.
Colunga also recognized Burks’ mother Cherie Burks Jeffrey for the extraordinary strength she demonstrated in the aftermath of her son’s death. He told her directly that her courage had transferred to officers throughout the department during one of its most painful moments.
Jeffrey spoke publicly for the first time since her son’s funeral. She expressed deep gratitude to the department and everyone who has continued to keep her son’s name alive.
She reflected on the life Burks led before joining law enforcement noting that he first served as a teacher before becoming a Dallas police officer. Jeffrey described her son as someone who genuinely loved people and lived out that love every day.
Lieutenant Frederick Mears echoed that sentiment calling Burks a hero and an outstanding man whose impact on those who served with him cannot be overstated.
Jeffrey said her faith remains her source of strength and comfort as she continues to grieve. She expressed her belief that her son is at peace and that she holds onto the hope of one day seeing him again.
The portrait now hangs permanently at the South Central Patrol Division serving as a daily reminder to every officer who walks through those doors of the ultimate sacrifice Darron Burks made while protecting the people of Dallas.
