A man suspected of breaking into a Mesquite home ended up in police custody after being shot by one of the residents inside the property. The incident unfolded in the 2600 block of Brushwood Lane and drew a swift response from local law enforcement.

Residents inside the home were awakened by loud banging sounds coming from elsewhere in the house. One resident got up to check on the noise and discovered a man actively forcing his way into the home before shooting the intruder.

When officers arrived on scene they located the suspect outside the residence suffering from a gunshot wound. First aid was administered at the scene before the man was transported to a local hospital for further medical treatment.

Despite his injuries the suspect was placed under arrest and now faces a burglary of a habitation charge. Authorities did not release the identity of the suspect or details about his current medical condition.

The resident who fired the shot has not been identified and no charges against them have been announced at this time. Texas law generally permits residents to use force including deadly force to protect themselves and their property from intruders under certain circumstances.

Investigators are continuing to examine the full circumstances surrounding the break-in and shooting. The case remains active and under review by Mesquite police.
