A 34-year-old woman whose pickup truck rolled onto a youth soccer field in Wichita, Kansas, killing two people and injuring 10 others, has been released without charges as authorities continue their investigation, police announced Sunday.
Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan confirmed that no charges have been filed against the woman, whose identity has not been made public. Investigators are awaiting results from toxicology testing and a mechanical inspection of the vehicle before making any charging decisions.
The deadly incident unfolded Saturday at the Stryker Sports Complex in northeast Wichita during an active youth soccer match. Preliminary findings indicate the Chevrolet pickup was parked in a nearby lot before it moved onto the field and struck multiple players and bystanders.
Two victims died at the scene. Police identified them as 6-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer, both residents of McPherson, Kansas. The two were not acquainted with each other.
Ten additional victims ranging in age from 5 to 68 were transported to local hospitals. Their injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
According to police, the woman had one child participating in a game on a separate field at the complex at the time of the crash. Two of her other children were inside the truck with her when it struck the crowd.
Chief Sullivan said investigators have spoken with more than 30 witnesses, including the driver herself and her two children who were present in the vehicle. He emphasized that officers are committed to fully understanding the sequence of events that led to the tragedy.
The investigation remains active and ongoing as authorities work to determine whether criminal charges will ultimately be pursued.
