A family trip to the State Fair of Texas turned into a terrifying ordeal for a Dallas mother after her purse was stolen while she cared for her young son who is battling terminal brain cancer.
Kayla Price had brought her boys to the fair for a day of rides and memories when she reached for her purse and discovered it was gone. Inside were two doses of a prescription nasal spray designed to stop seizures for her son Devin who suffers from midline glioma, an aggressive and incurable brain tumor.
Price said she noticed the purse missing at the exact moment she feared Devin was beginning to seize. The medication was irreplaceable in that moment and insurance would not cover an emergency refill leaving the family without a financial path forward.
The situation became even more urgent when Devin suffered a prolonged seizure the following Friday morning. The family was left scrambling for a solution.
That is when Dallas community figure Chris Bailey stepped in. Bailey is known for founding the Everybody Loves Everybody movement in the aftermath of the July 7 2016 Dallas police ambush and he had heard about Devin’s situation through word of mouth.
Bailey sent Price the money needed to replace the medication and she went directly to the pharmacy to fill the prescription. The quick turnaround gave the family the emergency supply they had been without since the theft.
Price said the act of generosity gave her more than financial help. It gave her peace of mind knowing her son had access to the medication that could save his life during a seizure.
Devin is currently receiving hospice care as his family manages the daily challenges of his terminal diagnosis. Despite the grim circumstances the family has found moments of joy and connection through the support of those around them.
Bailey indicated that his generosity may extend beyond the medication. He said he planned to visit Devin with what he described as an early Christmas surprise for the young boy.
The theft at one of Texas’s most beloved annual events has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a joyful day for a family already enduring an unimaginable struggle. State Fair of Texas officials have not publicly commented on the incident.
Anyone who may have witnessed the theft or has information is encouraged to contact Dallas Police.
