On April 1, 2026, a 55-year-old Vietnamese man named Tuan Van Bui passed away while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the Miami Correctional Facility. According to official reports, facility staff discovered Bui unresponsive in the early evening. Despite immediate medical efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead shortly after.
Bui’s history in the United States dates back to 1990, when he arrived under the Amerasian Homecoming Act—a program designed for children of American servicemen born in Vietnam. Although his specific visa status allowed for the possibility of permanent residency, authorities noted that he had never formally obtained American citizenship. The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation by federal and state agencies. This incident has drawn renewed attention to the use of the Miami Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison that recently began housing hundreds of immigration detainees following an agreement between Indiana leadership and federal officials.
